Although he should be back in the Jedi Temple meeting with the rest of the council, Mace cannot help but suspect there is more to this spy mission. While the rest of the council believes this is the best idea, he has had his misgivings about Anakin. The boy is conflicted, and his loyalty to the Jedi Order is doubtful. On one hand, he understands why; on the other, it does not change the risk, and Mace would rather apologize later than regret things now. So he watches and listens closely to the conversation on his wrist com as he makes his way up. But as he ascends to the chancellor’s office, he hears the conversation growing darker and more suspicious. Palpatine doesn’t just accept this report; he speaks to Anakin, first about his troubles, then about other things. Of how the Jedi are not treating him properly, of other opportunities. Of power. Mace feels pressure building in his chest as he hears this, and then the offer of how Palpatine can teach Anakin more about the Force, beyond what the Jedi might know. If the turbolift wasn’t moving, then it would feel like the world was frozen. By the time it opens, Mace is running towards the office, but the conversation keeps going. Suddenly, the door flies open, and Mace Windu steps out, his lightsaber ready as he looks at the pair. Anakin already has his weapon drawn and pointed at Palpatine. Mace: This party is over. Skywalker, arrest him. Anakin: Master? Why are you here? Palpatine: Isn’t it obvious? The Jedi Master does not trust you. He does not think you can handle this task on your own. He was probably spying on you now. Anakin: Is this true, master? Mace: I am simply ensuring that the chancellor faces justice, just like you. Anakin: No, not just like me. You entrusted this task to me, Master. Now you’re here claiming to be my ally while you can’t even answer my questions. You don’t trust me, do you? Mace: The chancellor is offering you only a dream, one that you will have to pay for when the time comes. Make no mistake about that! He pushes Anakin back and spins at his heel, trying to bring his lightsaber down, but Anakin catches it with the Force. Beads of sweat form on his brow as he struggles to hold the blade while the spark of his lightsaber reflects in his eyes. He suddenly stabs forward, and Mace must twist aside to avoid it. Anakin: He promises me power. The ability to do what no Jedi can do. The chance to save those that matter most to me. Mace: You speak of attachment!
