Let's explore the depths of it in the video. Obi-Wan Kenobi stands at the edge of the lava bank and watches Anakin Skywalker burn on the black volcanic rock below him. The flames catch Anakin's tunic first, then his legs, then everything else, and his screams carry across the platform until his voice breaks and he goes still. Obi-Wan turns away and takes three steps toward Padmé's skiff before he stops walking. He stands there for four seconds, and then he slides down the embankment and grabs Anakin by the collar of his smoldering robes and drags him up the slope toward the ship while the heat eats through his gloves and blisters both palms. Hours later, on Polis Massa, Obi-Wan stands across from Yoda in a dim corridor outside the surgical suite and pitches the only idea he has left. Obi-Wan(desperate): "A selective wipe. We erase Palpatine's influence, every grooming session, every private conversation, every seed he planted across thirteen years. We leave everything else." Yoda(grave): "Dangerous, this is. Deep into the boy's mind, Palpatine's roots have grown. Remove them cleanly, I cannot promise." Obi-Wan(firm): "If we leave those memories in place, we hand Palpatine his weapon back the moment Anakin wakes up. This is the only path we have." Yoda: Grave the risk is. Should Anakin remember, no telling what he will do. Obi-Wan: I understand, and I accept these risks. I will personally make sure they don’t come to pass. Yoda closes his eyes and reaches into Anakin's shattered mind through the Force. The procedure takes nine hours. He pulls each memory of Palpatine carefully and slowly, but the surrounding memories resist separation and tear at their edges as each thread comes loose. Temporal gaps open across years of Anakin's life where Palpatine's influence sat too close to real experience. By the ninth hour, blood runs from both of Yoda's ears and his hands shake violently against Anakin's temples. The manipulation is gone, and so is a significant portion of everything it touched. On the other side of the facility, medical droids deliver the twins while Padmé fades on the table. She is conscious enough to hear them cry, conscious enough to see their faces when the droids place them near her, and conscious enough to ask the question Obi-Wan dreads. Padmé(weak, afraid): "Where is Anakin?" Obi-Wan: “He’s alive…in the surgery room.” Padmé (gasping): " I kept telling myself on the ship that I'd imagined it. That the man I married couldn't have looked at me like that. Like I was…an obstacle..But he did. He chose it. He chose it while I was standing right there." Obi-Wan (quiet): "You didn't imagine it. And I am sorry… for every moment the Order looked the other way, for every warning none of us said aloud. What he did to you was real. The man who did it is not the one you loved. That man is gone." Padmé (barely audible): "Then don't let him near them. Not until you're certain. Promise me." Obi-Wan (after a long pause): "I promise." She names the boy Luke and the girl Leia. She holds them both once, briefly, and then her grip loosens, and the monitors flatline, and Padmé Amidala dies in a medical facility at the edge of the galaxy. Three days pass before Anakin opens his eyes in a recovery room. His body is wrapped in bacta patches and synthetic grafts, and his legs end at the knee. His first word is "Padmé." Obi-Wan sits beside the bed and tells him she is dead, complications after the birth. He doesn't mention the choking or her final words. Anakin stares at the ceiling and doesn't speak for a long time. His mind is fractured. Memories arrive in fragments and disconnected flashes. He remembers the Jedi Temple and the Clone Wars and his years beside Obi-Wan in the field. He remembers Padmé in pieces, the courtship on Naboo, the secret wedding, her pregnancy. #starwars #starwarswhatif #whatif
