We will decompose any given fraction into a multiplication problem and and an addition problem that involve smaller fractions. For example, the fraction 3/8 can be rewritten as 3 times the fraction 1/8. This can also be written as 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8. We will explore the meaning of fractions and use the concept of multiplying fractions frequently in this lesson. In addition, we will use the concept of adding fractions to illustrate the idea. In the future, when the student considers any given fraction, they should now be able to see what the fraction really means in terms of multiplication and addition.
