CIVIDALE DEL FRIULI - Monastero di Santa Maria in Valle e Tempietto Longobardo

The Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle, which encloses the church of San Giovanni and the Lombard Temple, represents one of the most important monumental testimonies of the Lombards in Italy. It is part of the "Lombards in Italy: the places of power", a list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The age of Lombard domination in Italy constituted a fundamental moment of transition between the classical and medieval world. The origin of the monastery probably dates back to 830, in the late Lombard period. From the Carolingian period, the monastery of Santa Maria in Valle remained for a long time among the assets granted by the empire to the Patriarch of Aquileia. In medieval times the importance of the monastery in the panorama of ecclesiastical institutions was such that it became more and more the object of privileges and donations which contributed to increasing its power and prestige. All of this favors the monumental growth of the Monastery which had extensive development especially between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, bringing the complex to its current configuration, with the buildings of worship and the monastric spaces centered around the large cloister. In 1812 it was purchased by the Municipality of Cividale and, after a restoration, it was used as the seat of a public school for the young Cividalese under the guidance of Benedictine nuns. Since 2000 it has been permanently owned by the Municipality of Cividale del Friuli. The so-called Lombard Temple (known as the oratory of Santa Maria in Valle) is located inside the monastery and is the most important and best preserved architectural testimony of the Lombard period. It consists of a square-based hall and there are still conspicuous remains of an extraordinary stucco and fresco decoration. The apse was once decorated with mosaics, but today no trace remains.
