Monastère de Currière - Frères, France

The monastery of l’Assomption Notre-Dame stands near Saint-Laurent-du-Pont in the Chartreuse Mountains, in a particularly secluded place surrounded by vast forests and high cliffs, at an altitude of 840 metres. There, in this setting of greenery and rocks, the community of the Monks of Bethlehem, of the Assumption of the Virgin and of Saint Bruno was born within the Church on 6 October 1976, the feast of Saint Bruno. The monastery is therefore a foundational place for all the members of our community. The silence and rugged beauty of its setting powerfully recall, to the monks who live there and to the seekers of God who come to pray, the cry of faith from Saint Bruno’s heart: “Is there any other good than God alone?” This monastery of the Monks of Bethlehem is built beside the monastery Notre-Dame du Buisson Ardent of the Nuns of Bethlehem, on the site of Currière, a place with a long tradition of prayer. Indeed, a Carthusian monastery was established there in the thirteenth century, and monks prayed there without interruption until the French Revolution. The buildings, which were then left abandoned, subsequently housed a school for deaf-mute children and later a holiday camp. In 1974, this place was restored to its original vocation of prayer and solitude with the arrival of the community of sisters. After the foundation, the first Monks of Bethlehem were eager to build a monastery suited to their vocation. The first brothers began building their monastery within the monastery barn, typical of the region, where they established their church and communal areas, before constructing around it a cloister with eleven hermitages.
