A Walk through the Historic Lister Lane Cemetery. Halifax

Lister Lane Cemetery (formerly the Halifax General Cemetery) opened in 1841. Rather than just being a Graveyard, the grounds were designed almost like a garden, with expectation the area could be used for rest and contemplation. Anybody, of any or non religion, could be buried here. By 1963 the Cemetery buried its last body. The next few years saw the Cemetery become an overgrown wilderness and ruined by vandalism. Around 2000, the cemetery was being cared for by The Friends of Lister Lane Cemetery who, to save it, open only on certain occasions or when volunteers are on site. 20 years of hard work have seen them, and the graveyard, receive numerous deserved rewards. Today, we were granted special access to look around the cemetery for ourselves by the group....we only give you a brief snapshot of some of the stories, much more can be read here.... https://www.listerlanecemetery.co.uk/ Thank you to them, and we hope you enjoy this rare look round a fabulous piece of Halifax history.
