Kishmul's Galley - Traditional Scottish Music on Tenor Guitar (Zoom H2n)

Originally Kishmul's Galley is what's referred to as a waulking song, a work song. Waulking is the method used in to shrink the newly woven cloth, which is sewn together to form a complete circle and then soaked in hot urine (yep you read that right, they soaked it in piss). It's then placed on a table, with two rows of women on either side who pass the cloth round sunwise, using a rhythmic, kneading motion in time to the song. A solo singer would sing the narrative often in Scottish gaelic though not always, whilst the chorus, normally a set of meaningless vocals (as is the case here) would then be sung by whole company. Kishmul’s Castle was built in the 13th century at the southern end of the Isle of Barra and was the stronghold of the MacNeills of Barra, and the song tales the tale of a galley approaching Kishmul's Castle where the hospitality that awaits.
