GAO Ping, Window at Dusk for solo piano (2024)

The work was commissioned by the Xiamen International Piano Competition as a required piece to be performed by all contestants during the contest in October that year. The work was recorded in 2025 by the pianist Zhou Yubo and released worldwide on MDG lable (Germany) in the album Ping Gao Piano Works. The title refers to the moment of the lingering but gradually receding light of dusk. During the early stage of the composition, quite by chance, a poem titled At a Window appeared before me. It was written by the American poet Carl Sandburg (1878-1967). The poem ends on a note of openness with hopeful anticipation. Though set in the background of increasing dimness of an evening, one feels somehow illuminated when reading the final lines: Let me go to the window, Watch there the day-shapes of dusk And wait and know the coming Of a little love. My music in no way tries to evoke the meaning of the poem, and the connection between the music and the text remains entirely intangible. This, of course, hardly matters at all！ What I do know is that my encounter with At a Window felt like a delicious serendipity, and being enveloped in the luminosity of the poem, I completed the score to Window at Dusk. 《晚窗》作于2024年夏。乐曲是厦门国际钢琴比赛组委会的委托创作，并作为当年10月赛事的指定作品，由来自各国的20余名复赛选手首演。2025年，钢琴家周宇博为作品录音，收录于专辑《高平钢琴作品集》，由德国MDG唱片公司全球发行。 《晚窗》的“晚”字，指的不是夜晚，而是天光将尽而未尽的傍晚时分。在构思《晚窗》期间，一首题为《在窗前》（At a Window）的英文诗偶然出现在我眼前。诗作者叫卡尔 桑德堡（Carl Sandburg，1878-1967），是一位美国诗人。诗的结尾开放并怀有期待，尽管是暮色情景，读之却有被照亮的感觉： 让我走到窗前， 望着暮色沉沉 等待，并相信 那一点点爱正在到来。 （李以亮译） 我的音符没有在任何程度上试图附会诗的意涵，而彼诗与此曲之间的关系何在，我也根本无法说清。这也实在无关紧要！唯可确定的是，《在窗前》心有灵犀般让我遇见，而在它光晕笼罩之中，我完成了《晚窗》的乐谱。 （高平）
