It is often said that after World War II, capitalism stood on one side and socialism on the other. But was that really the case? The system called "socialism" in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe was actually another system of exploitation (state capitalism) where the state took the place of the capitalists. The post-war trend of state + capital—that is, state capitalism—was a dominant trend in newly independent Third World nations, regardless of East or West, as an economic organization for growth. This video examines the opposite side of the Cold War from a perspective of "History From Below." It revives the forgotten rebellion of 1956, in which real workers rose up on their own against a regime that claimed to be a "Workers' Country" (which was, in reality, state capitalism). The historical significance of the struggle of Hungarian workers in 1956 and the Workers' Councils of Budapest has long been forgotten under the Cold War system.
