Lake Ohrid | Paddleboarding & Snorkeling | One of the World's Oldest Lakes

Come along with Craig, Jesse, and me as we paddleboard and snorkel the crystal-clear turquoise waters of Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in all of Europe. We found a lesser known little beach tucked between Pogradec, Albania and Ohrid, North Macedonia, a peaceful hidden gem near the border where the water is so clear you can see straight to the bottom. Lake Ohrid is an incredible wonder and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, believed to be between 1 and 3 million years old, making it one of the most ancient lakes on the planet. Shared between Albania and North Macedonia, this stunning lake is surrounded by dramatic mountains, (that we frequently hike) charming lakeside villages, and some of the most incredible scenery in the Balkans. What makes Ohrid so special is its extraordinary biodiversity. The lake is home to more than 200 endemic species found nowhere else on Earth, including the famous Ohrid trout, freshwater snails, sponges, and unique aquatic life that have earned it the nickname "the Galapagos of Europe." Snorkeling here feels like exploring a living museum, gliding over underwater springs, reed beds, and ancient ecosystems that have survived for millions of years. This was one of the most unforgettable memories we made here in this area so far. And one of the last fun weekends we had with Jesse before he moved back to the USA. Whether you love paddleboarding, wild swimming, snorkeling, hidden beaches, off the beaten path travel, or the wild natural beauty of the Balkans, you'll want to add Lake Ohrid, Pogradec, and the Albanian Riviera region to your bucket list.
