Are psychotherapy and spirituality incompatible? Can a person go to therapy and, at the same time, seek support from a shaman, a religious community, or a spiritual practice? What happens when a therapist's beliefs differ from those of the person they are supporting? In this episode of What Therapists Don't Talk About, we discuss one of the most complex and least discussed topics in clinical practice: the intersection of shamanism, religion, spirituality, and psychotherapy. Drawing on our experiences as therapists, we explore questions that challenge us both personally and professionally: • How do we support our clients without imposing our own beliefs? • What is the difference between spirituality, religion, and religiosity? • When can a spiritual practice become a resource for coping with suffering, and when can it pose a risk? • What do professional ethics and scientific evidence say about addressing these issues in therapy? • How do we recognize our own biases, doubts, and convictions in the consulting room? This episode does not seek to discredit or promote any belief. It seeks to open a space for dialogue where we can reflect on the role of meaning, hope, rituals, and the diversity of ways of understanding the human experience. Because what we therapists often keep silent about is that providing support also involves recognizing that not everyone understands the world in the same way… and that our responsibility is to offer a safe, respectful, and ethically committed space for all of them.
