Bangladesh has the highest rate of child marriages per population in Asia. Some 38 million Bangladeshi women—one in two—were married before reaching the age of majority, according to UNICEF. However, the country's law has prohibited child marriage since 1929. In a country where the legal age for marriage is 18 for women and 21 for men, nothing seems able to stop this scourge, despite campaigns and actions by national and international organizations. In recent years, the number of child marriages has remained stable.
