Sigmar Polke Eine Winterreise Curated by Vincente Todolí at DAVID ZWIRNER
James Kalm passes up shows by Cindy Sherman, Luc Tuymans and Alex Katz and instead makes his way to the west end of Chelsea to bring viewers a glance at “Eine Winterreise”, curated by Vincente Todolí, the first exhibition of the work of Sigmar Polke at the David Zwirner Gallery. Polke (1941-2010) is recognized as one of the most important post war German painters. His unique conceptual approach to painting set him apart from many of the Neo-Expressionists, while simultaneously connecting his work with alchemy and the Dadaist tradition. These works were in part inspired by the artist’s travels through Indonesia, New Guinea, Australia, and Thailand during the late 1970s and early 1980s, and his interest in the ways these cultures used and perceived of color. This program was recorded May 5, 2016 in Chelsea.
