Papermaking with Water Hyacinth: Eco Innovation in Ghana

The WA BiCC-funded water hyacinth project by Global Mamas' is underway and is making strides with a new eco-friendly product line using the invasive water hyacinth from the Volta River. Harvesting this invasive species kills two birds with a stone, by helping restore biodiversity to the river basin otherwise threatened by the water hyacinth, and providing much-needed alternative revenue streams for local community members. The hyacinth paper shown here combines certain percentages of natural fibers from the invasive water weed with recycled paper pulp. Global Mamas is a fair trade nonprofit committed to providing sustainable opportunities to women artisans in Ghana so that they can prosper while providing for themselves and their families.
