Full flight | Lufthansa Boeing 747-430 | LH493 Vancouver to Frankfurt (D-ABTK)

Welcome to my first 747 flight in almost 20 years! On 7 April 2026, I flew on a Lufthansa 747-400 to Frankfurt, where after a short layover there, I am headed to Vienna on my first visit to Austria! Join us on an adventure on this rare and exciting aircraft! The 747, affectionately known as the Jumbo Jet and the Queen of the Skies, is probably the world's best recognized passenger aircraft. First flown in 1969 and introduced to service by Pan Am in 1970, its large size and long range enabled intercontinental flights to be flown more efficiently than its predecessors like the 707. The 747-400 variant was first flown in 1988 and incorporates an EFIS flight deck and is the most successful version of the 747 family. Despite over 600 aircraft flying passengers in 2000, most airlines have retired them in favor of efficient twin-engine aircraft like the A350 and 787, and the 747-400 passenger variant has been retired to a point where it is almost extinct, with Lufthansa holding onto 8 remaining aircraft as of 2026. The service onboard was spectacular, with two hot meals served, and the crew were professional. At the end of the flight, I got a chance to visit the cockpit, which made this flight one of my best ever. Having flown the Felis 747-200 on X-Plane 11, that has enabled me to understand the 747's systems knowledge much deeper. Enjoy!
