One of our favourite things to do off the beaten path in Japan is to experience a traditional Japanese onsen bath. As part of our van life trip in Japan, we head to Takachiho town which is known for its stunning gorge which was formed by volcanic eruptions. Takachiho gorge is located in Miyazaki prefecture on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu. We hear about a nearby traditional Japanese outdoor bath which uses a cast iron bathtub known as a goemonburo bath in Japanese. The water in the bath is heated by lighting a fire underneath the bathtub. As we prepare the secret Japanese onsen bath, we enjoy cooking some traditional Japanese food using bamboo and local ingredients.
