As his influence grew, however, mounting allegations of psychological manipulation, coercion, and abuse began to surface claims that Jones consistently denied. In 1977, Jones relocated hundreds of his followers to a remote settlement deep in the jungles of Guyana, South America, which they named Jonestown. Presented to the world as a utopian community, the settlement operated in near-total isolation from the outside world. Survivors and witnesses later described an atmosphere of fear, strict control, and practices designed to test absolute loyalty. In November 1978, U.S. Congressman Leo J. Ryan traveled to Guyana alongside journalists and concerned family members to investigate the growing reports surrounding the community. This documentary follows the events of that visit through the firsthand accounts of journalist Tim Reiterman, survivor Vernon Gosney, and Sherwin Harris, a father who had traveled to see his daughter. As members of the community expressed their desire to leave, a chain of events unfolded that led to a catastrophic and irreversible outcome on November 18, 1978 a day that claimed more than 900 lives, including nearly 300 children, and shocked the world. Drawing on interviews with Stephan Jones, Jim Jones' own son, as well as survivors and witnesses who lived through those final days, this documentary provides a deeply human account of how ordinary people, united by hope and idealism, were led into one of the darkest chapters of the 20th century.
