How One Chairman Destroyed the Engine Works That Built the Flying Scotsman: Doncaster

For one hundred and seventy-two years, Doncaster Works built the locomotives that defined British railways. The Flying Scotsman, Mallard, and more than two thousand steam engines were assembled inside the same workshop on Hexthorpe Road. Nigel Gresley designed his greatest machines there. British Rail built its last ever locomotives there. Then the decisions started being made elsewhere, by Beeching, by BREL, by Bombardier, and finally by Wabtec Corporation in Pittsburgh. In 2026, the gates closed for good. This is the story of the Plant, the people who built it, and the boardroom that ended it.
