From Water Hyacinth to Bio Fuel - BBC World News
Water hyacinth weed has invaded large parts of Lake Victoria, blocking the fish-landing beaches, paralyzing fishing activities and lake transport threatening the livelihoods of millions dependent on Africa’s largest freshwater lake. The Kenyan government has funded work to clear the hyacinth but so far in vain. But a local high school teacher may have come up with a partial solution to turn the plant into bio ethanol fuel for home use. I filmed The BBC’s Mercy Juma reporting from Western Kenya.
