NAPOLI - Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo

The church of Gesù Nuovo, or of the Trinità Maggiore, is located in Piazza del Gesù Nuovo in front of the obelisk of the Immaculate Conception and the Basilica of Santa Chiara. It is one of the most important and largest churches in the city, among the greatest concentrations of Baroque painting and sculpture, on which some of the most influential artists of the Neapolitan school worked. Inside, the body of San Giuseppe Moscati is kept. It was built between 1584 and 1601 on the site of the Renaissance palace that belonged to the noble Sanseverino family, who were then forced into exile when the heir of Roberto Sanseverino, Antonello, who had come into conflict with the Aragonese court, organized a revolt against King Ferdinand I of Aragon. The latter, having discovered the conspiracy against him, bloodily suppressed it, forcing the noble family to flee. After the family's assets were confiscated, the property was sold to the Society of Jesus, who built the church there, dedicated to the Immaculate Madonna and called "del Gesù Nuovo" to distinguish it from a pre-existing church located at the end of Via Paladino, and renamed, after the consecration of the new place of worship, "del Gesù Vecchio". The church suffered serious damage during the air raids on Naples in the Second World War. During one of these bombings, a bomb fell right on the ceiling of the central nave, miraculously remaining unexploded. Today the bomb, rendered inert, is on display in the rooms adjacent to the right nave of the church, dedicated to San Giuseppe Moscati. The characteristic façade of Palazzo Sanseverino was preserved as the façade of the superimposed church. It is characterised by particular ashlars in the form of massive projecting pyramids (called "diamanti"), common in the Venetian Renaissance. The interior is rich in marble decorations made by Cosimo Fanzago in 1630. The polychrome marble floor, made in the first half of the 18th century in place of a previous one, perhaps in terracotta, features numerous coats of arms and tombstones that commemorate the benefactors of the church. The largest coat of arms, of enormous dimensions, is located shortly after the entrance, just beyond the holy water stoups in precious marble from the 17th century, and extends for several meters both in length and width. On the counter-façade, in correspondence with the central nave, above the main portal, there is the large fresco by Francesco Solimena with the Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple, signed and dated 1725. The vault of the central nave and that of the transept were painted by Belisario Corenzio between 1636 and 1638. The pictorial cycle that occupies the vault of the central nave is dedicated to biblical scenes and miracles performed in the name of Jesus. The dome was rebuilt by Ignazio di Nardo in 1786. The fresco cycle in the apse is entirely dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and was created by Massimo Stanzione in a very short time between 1639 and 1640. The back wall of the apse was created between the 17th and 18th centuries. In the centre there is a niche that houses the large marble statue of the Immaculate Madonna, sculpted in 1859 by Antonio Busciolano. The main altar, completed in 1857, was conceived by the Jesuit Ercole Giuseppe Grossi and designed by Raffaele Postiglione. All the precious sculptures and decorations of this altar are centered on the theme of the Eucharist, and were created by various artists under the supervision of the Jesuit Alfonso Vinzi. In the left nave there are a total of five chapels: three large chapels are along the nave, an even larger one corresponds to the terminal part of the transept (after the second chapel) and a last one acts as an "apse of the nave". The right nave has the same layout as the left nave. San Giuseppe Moscati The chapel of the Visitation is also dedicated to San Giuseppe Moscati (1882-1927), an illustrious doctor and professor of physiological chemistry at the Faculty of Medicine of Naples, who distinguished himself for his tireless charity towards the poorest sick people. The body of the Saint is in the bronze urn in the center of the chapel, in front of the altar frontal, where it was transferred in 1977. The Halls of San Giuseppe Moscati house historical photos, manuscripts and material memories of the Saint. These include his clothes and medical instruments, and even the furnishings of the doctor's office and bedroom, originally present in his house, which is located a short distance from the church.
