CARAVACA DE LA CRUZ

Caravaca de la Cruz is located in the Region of Murcia. It is a significant site for Catholic worship, as since 1998, during the papacy of John Paul II, it has been considered one of the eleven holy cities of this religious denomination, having the privilege of celebrating a perpetual jubilee year every seven years in honor of the Holy and True Cross. One of its main attractions is the castle that rises above the urban layout of Caravaca. Of Muslim origin, it was expanded in the 15th century by the Knights Templar and later passed to the Order of Santiago. Fourteen towers guard the Sanctuary of the Holy and True Cross, which was built in its center in the 17th century. One of the religious buildings considered a masterpiece of the Murcian Renaissance is located in Caravaca: the Church of El Salvador, which has been declared a Historic-Artistic Monument. Completing the cultural tour are the Church of La Soledad, now the Archaeological Museum; The Carmelite convent, founded by Saint John of the Cross; and the Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in the 16th century on the site of the former church of the Hospitaller Brotherhood of Saint John Lateran. Renaissance in style, its interior preserves beautiful Mudéjar coffered ceilings and Baroque altarpieces.
