Wrote QUICK SONG for Wife’s B-Day…She CONVINCED Him To Release It…Became a #1 Hit!-Professor of Rock
Coming up next, an interview with one of history's only rock singer-songwriters that has had a big hit in the 70s, 80s, and the 90s. Dennis DeYoung of Styx is a bonafide "3 Decades Icon." He did in the 70s with Babe, in the 80s with Mr. Roboto, and Show Me The Way in the 90s. Well, In the late 70s, Dennis needed a birthday present for his wife, so on the fly, he sat at the piano and wrote a very personal song to give to her… Well, the song was so good his bandmates begged him to put it on their new album. He wasn’t so sure but at the last second his bandmates got him to agree and it became the band’s first #1 hit and one of the biggest songs of 1979. Babe started out as a birthday present. He tells us the story next as well as insight on the iconic guitar solo. It’s a can’t miss. I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs. Today we sit down with a legendary singer and songwriter that is in a very exclusive club. One of only a few rock frontmen to have a top-three hit in three different decades. When Dennis was with Styx back in the day he sang and wrote many hits including a top 3 in the 70s 80s and 90s. To be exact, Babe went to #1 in December of 1979, The Best of Times and Mr. Roboto both went to #3 in 1981 and 1983, and Show Me the Way was a #3 hit in 1990. See if you can guess who the other lead singers from bands were that accomplished this in the comments. Styx was like a rocket in those days, releasing hit after hit. They burst onto the scene with Lady in 1973, Arguably the first power ballad ever! after a few more top 40 hits they hit #8 with Sail Away, and we have the story of both of these from Dennis. After that, Blue Collar Man (Long Nights) and Renegade both written by Tommy Shaw were both top 25 hits. As the 70s wrapped up Styx released the album Cornerstone in October of 1979. It became the band’s third straight multiplatinum album. The album was propelled by their first single. Babe, written by Dennis. Babe went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. it also crossed over to the AC chart at #9 as well as #1 in Canada and South Africa. It went top 10 in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Ireland so it was a global hit. Dennis tells a very interesting story about how the song came to be and how it was recorded in our exclusive interview. He also tells us about his new album 26 East Volume 1, Volume 2 is also out and they are both really great. You can get both at the link below. Check out both volumes of 26 East it’s really an amazing set. Here’s Dennis Deyoung with the story. Leave us a comment about this classic rock ballad what are your memories of it and this band. What do you remember about this time in music from 1979 going into 1980? Who were the other artists to have a top 3 hit in three different decades? Let us know in the comments.
