Band Told QUITTING Singer SHE HAD NO TALENT…They Had 1 Hit...She Had 100! | Professor of Rock

Coming up, we jump back to a glorious year in music, to remember some hit songs that were so indicative of that period of popular music, you will cry tears of nostalgia…Were going back to 1987….We’ll tell the story about Chris de Burgh seeing his wife across the room at a party, and he was so enchanted by her presence after taking her for granted that he wrote the classic 80s hit Lady in Red about it. Yet the legacy of the song would be tarnished by a scandal when the singer had an affair with their nanny. There’s also the song Right on Track that came from the Breakfast Club, a band whose lead singer once told Madonna that she had ‘no talent,’ so she quit the group to prove him wrong, and did he ever pay for that dumb comment. And there’s the Genesis song Tonight Tonight Tonight about being trapped in the prison of cocaine addiction, yet the song was used by a beer brand to illustrate having a fun evening with friends. And lastly, a song by Yes, one of the most musically complex rock bands ever, with one of the stupidest lyrics in rock history. These tales and more on our feature about Dated Hit Songs from 1987….NEXT on Professor of Rock. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers 22Unchained, Thomas Halterman, Keith Novak, Yvonne Fus, Jeffrey Thorn ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to the Professor of Rock Podcast Apple: https://apple.co/445fVov Spotify: https://spoti.fi/42JpfvU Amazon: https://amzn.to/44b5D6m iHeartRadio: https://bit.ly/444h8MO ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Patreon: http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Merch Store: https://professor-of-rock-lsn-shop.fo... Thanks for hanging out with us on Professor of Rock. It’s time for another edition of our SHOW DATED, songs that are of their time! The songs that due to their sound, define the year they came from. We're going into nostalgia overload and setting the time circuits to the year 1987. Now I’ve done 3 episodes so far, and I still have viewers who will get charged up thinking I’m dissing these songs, but I’m only saying they sound like the year they came out, and that’s not a bad thing. Coming in at #10 It’s the power ballad, “Carrie” by Europe, from The Final Countdown album, is the Swedish rock group’s biggest US hit, rising to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. People forget that.. It actually out-charted the anthemic stadium rocker, “The Final Countdown” on the Hot 100, but, I have to say, that tune went to #1 in 25 countries. “The Final Countdown” landed at #8. “Carrie” was written by Joey Tempest and Mic Michaeli, and the song tells a story of heartbreak and saying goodbye to a dear friend, dealing with the pain of a failed relationship. The melody for “Carrie” actually came from Mic Michaeli, the band’s keyboardist. He was in a hotel lobby, noodling on a small portable Yamaha keyboard, when vocalist Joey Tempest heard something Mic was playing that he really liked, and urged them to turn it into a song for the band. Most of the Final Countdown album was built around uptempo tracks, with “Carrie” sticking out as the odd one — basically crafted to fit the late-80s U.S. power ballad craze. That formula that the band followed is why the song sounds dated today. Songs are definitely pigeonholed when they try to ride a trend. It seemed that every rock band had at least one power ballad in their arsenal in the late 80s, and many of them ended up being a fan favorite. In it original acoustic form, the song probably would have aged better. Europe wrote “Carrie” a few years before it was released, and played it in concert as an acoustic break in the middle of their live set. Back to our spotlight on Dated Hit Songs from 1987, ay #9 we are going to sashay across the floor to dance ‘cheek to cheek’ with the ballad every 80s kid knows and loves, even if some won’t admit to it. “The Lady in Red” by Chris De Burgh: Chris de Burgh wrote The Lady in Red after he caught a glimpse of his wife, Diane, at a party. He saw her in a red dress and suddenly realized he’d stopped noticing the woman he loved. It felt like a moment of rediscovery, and he turned that into a song that also served as an apology after an argument. The sweet origin story and the irresistible chorus weren’t just a love note...
