But Jehosheba, daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah, secretly carrying him away from among the king's sons who had been murdered. She hid him and his nurse in the bedroom out of Athaliah's sight, so that he was not killed. So he remained hidden with her for six years in the temple of the LORD, while Athaliah reigned in the land. In the seventh year, Jehoiada summoned the commanders of hundreds, the Carians, and the guards, and brought them to him in the temple of the LORD. He made a covenant with them, made them swear an oath in the temple of the LORD, and showed them the king's son. The commanders did everything as Jehoiada the priest commanded. Each took his men, both those who went on duty on the Sabbath and those who went off duty on the Sabbath, and came to Jehoiada the priest. The priest then gave the commanders the spears and shields of King David that were in the temple of the LORD. The guards lined up around the king, each armed with weapons, from the south corner of the temple to the north, before the altar and the temple. Then he brought out the king's son, placed a crown on him, and presented him with the certificate; he was anointed and installed as king. Then they clapped their hands and shouted, "Long live the king!" Hearing the clamor of the people, Athaliah went to the people into the temple of the LORD. She looked, and there was the king standing by the pillar—as was the custom, with commanders and trumpets around the king, and all the people of the land were rejoicing and blowing trumpets. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and cried, "Plot! Plot!" Then Jehoiada the priest gave orders to the captains of hundreds who were in command of the army, commanding them, "Take her out of the temple, and out of the ranks; whoever follows her, let him be put to the sword!" For the priest had said, "She shall not be killed in the temple of the LORD." She was captured, and when she entered the road where the horses enter the palace, she was put to death. Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the king and the people, that they should be the Lord's people, and between the king and the people. Then all the people went to the temple of Baal and tore it down. They utterly smashed its altars and idols, and killed Matthan, the priest of Baal, before the altars. Then the priest Jehoiada posted a guard before the temple of the Lord. All the people of the land rejoiced, and the city was at peace.
