How Workers Diverted the Colorado River Before Hoover Dam Could Be Built
On November 14, 1932, workers stood inside Black Canyon and watched one of America's most dangerous rivers begin to change its course. There was no dam yet — no concrete wall, no Lake Mead, only rock, dust, heat, and a river that had carved its own path through the desert for thousands of years. Before Hoover Dam could rise, the Colorado River had to be moved out of the way entirely. Engineers designed four diversion tunnels, two on the Nevada side and two on the Arizona side, each excavated to about fifty-six feet in diameter and later lined with three feet of concrete. Combined, they stretched nearly sixteen thousand feet through solid canyon rock — wide enough for a locomotive to disappear inside. Their job was simple to describe and brutal to execute: carry the entire Colorado River around the future dam site so the riverbed could be exposed down to bedrock, drained dry enough for construction to begin. The work followed a relentless rhythm — drill, load, blast, ventilate, clear, repeat — carried out with pneumatic drills, dynamite, and jackhammers, inside tunnels where the noise had nowhere to escape. Crews called muckers cleared the broken rock after each blast, hauling out roughly one and a half million cubic yards of spoil over the course of the project. It was, in every sense, a production line built entirely on human bodies in a punishing desert canyon. This video isn't only about the engineering. It's also about the people the numbers tend to erase. Hoover Dam's official death toll stands at ninety-six industrial fatalities, but behind that number are individual lives: Howard Cornelius, a twenty-three-year-old oiler on a gas shovel. A.O. George, a forty-year-old mechanic. Gus Enberg, a thirty-six-year-old miner. Carl Soderstrom, listed near the lower portals. Their names rarely appear alongside the famous photographs of the finished dam, but the diversion tunnels they built made everything that came after possible.
