How Men Built New York’s First Clean Water Tunnel Before the City Died of Disease

New York City was burning. It was December 1835, and 674 buildings were gone in 48 hours — not because the fire was too fast, but because there was no water to stop it. A city of 270,000 people had no running water. What happened next took five years, four thousand men, and a self-taught engineer who started as an axeman clearing brush for the Erie Canal. This is the story of how America built the Croton Aqueduct — 41 miles of brick tunnel, carrying 60 million gallons a day from Westchester County into Manhattan by gravity alone, before a single pump existed that could do the job. It is also the story of John B. Jervis, who never attended a class in engineering, and of Brendan Shaughnessy and Hugh Carew, whose names are in the ledgers but not on any plaque. The hydraulic cement. The cofferdam failures in the Harlem River. The granite cut north of Yonkers where men drilled by candlelight and tamped black powder into the rock. The High Bridge — 15 stone arches, 114 feet above the water, modeled on the Roman aqueducts and still standing today. The morning of June 27, 1842, when clean cold water arrived in Manhattan and a former mayor of New York put his hands under a fountain and drank.
