Pochodzenie Basków | DNA, Język I Historia
From the Spanish and French valleys of the Western Pyrenees to the Atlantic coast of the Bay of Biscay, the historically isolated Basque people have lived for thousands of years. In this diverse and fertile region, the Basques have preserved their unique, non-Indo-European language and its dialects, Euskara, as well as their own cultural and regional identity. While European populations have changed over the centuries, the Basques have remained. Today, the region known by its inhabitants as Euskadi, País Vasco, or Euskal Herria has become renowned for its cuisine, wines made from ancient grape varieties like Tempranillo, traditional fishing villages, and picturesque towns. Tourism has replaced many of the conflicts of the past. However, defining Euskal Herria is as difficult as defining the word Herria itself. In Euskara, the root word "herri" can mean village, people, or nation. Euskal Herria is the collective identity of this ancient people. Historically, the Basque Country encompassed settlements along the western Pyrenees and is currently divided into seven provinces: Gipuzkoa, Bizkaia, Álava, and Nafarroa on the southern side of the Pyrenees, and Zuberoa, Lapurdi, and Nafarroa Beherea on the northern side. Euskara has five main dialects and is an isolated non-Indo-European language. About thirty percent of Basques speak Euskara, most in Spain, and a small number in France. The mystery of Euskara's long linguistic isolation has led to numerous theories regarding its origins, but only modern genetic research has yielded more definitive conclusions.
