[The Significance of "Shishi" in Japanese Culture] The Shishi (often referred to as "lion-dogs" in the West) is a mythical creature that originated in ancient China before being introduced to Japan. As a powerful symbol of protection, it is one of the most iconic motifs in traditional Japanese woodcarving and is widely depicted in many other artistic fields beyond wood sculpture. Guardians of Sacred Spaces: Shishi statues are commonly placed at the entrances of Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples.
