The first woman appointed to direct the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics, located over a thousand meters below the Abruzzo mountains. As a Research Director at the INFN, she conducts research in astroparticle physics. She has participated in the implementation of important experiments at CERN, the DESY laboratory in Hamburg, and later at Gran Sasso. She is currently working on the JUNO experiment to be conducted in China. She was a member of the CERN Strategy Group and the Scientific Advisory Committee for the European coordination of astroparticle physics. She published "The Ghost of the Universe – What is the Neutrino?" (Carocci 2015).
