After the 2001 Nisqually earthquake exposed its vulnerability, the city replaced it with a deep-bored tunnel and demolished the viaduct in 2019. What rose in its place is the 20-acre Waterfront Park — Seattle's largest civic project since the 1962 World's Fair. The rebuilt Pier 62 opened in 2020, the elevated Overlook Walk connecting Pike Place Market to the waterfront opened in October 2024, and Pier 58 reopened in July 2025 — just weeks before this walk was filmed.
