The city is built into a limestone canyon carved by the Gravina river, with cave dwellings excavated directly into the soft calcarenite rock. By the mid-20th century, the Sassi had become symbols of extreme poverty, and the Italian government relocated all residents to new housing between 1952 and the 1970s. A 1986 restoration law reopened the area, and UNESCO designation in 1993 accelerated its transformation. The walk passes a film set closure for The Passion of the Christ (2004), which used Matera as a stand-in for ancient Jerusalem.
