"Umezawa Manor in Sagami Province" Katsushika Hokusai (c. 1830–1832) The print is part of Hokusai's celebrated series "Fugaku Sanjūrokkei" ("Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji") and depicts cranes flying toward the mountain. According to Japanese tradition, the combination of Mount Fuji and the crane symbolizes good fortune and happiness. Umezawa is a locality at the foot of Mount Fuji. The series was originally conceived as thirty-six sheets; however, the publisher added ten more images, bringing the total number of prints in the series to forty-six. Published around 1830, it became the most celebrated landscape series in ukiyo-e. The print is executed in the horizontal ōban format using the "aizuri-e" technique — an image printed predominantly in blue. Hokusai employed the "aizuri" technique, combining undulating hills, soft clouds, and blue waters to achieve an image of extraordinary tranquility. The mist and pink hues capture the moment just before dawn. The final character in the print's title, read as "hidari", is likely a misprint — it should correctly be read as "zai" or "shō", meaning "manor" or "estate." This refers to a district of that name in the town of Ninomiya, approximately 80 kilometers from Tokyo along the coast. Known examples of the print are held in several of the world's leading museums: the "Victoria and Albert Museum" (London), the "Metropolitan Museum of Art" (New York), the "Museum of Fine Arts" (Boston), and the "British Museum" (London).
