Summer Party on the Bank of the Kamo River Utagava Toyohiro(1773-1828) A painter of the Edo period and a representative of the Utagawa school. His real name was Okajima Tojiro. From 1782 he studied under the artist Utagawa Toyoharu. Among his students were such masters as Hokusai and Hiroshige, whose styles were greatly shaped by Toyohiro's influence. The painting depicts patrons of the Shijoya restaurant in Kyoto dining on a platform that the establishment erected over the Kamo River for the summer. The guests are entertained by a pair of musicians and served by three waitresses wearing red aprons. This painting served as the model for a woodblock-printed triptych published in 1801. It represents the Sixth Month and is part of the series "Twelve Months by Two Artists" — a collaborative project by Toyohiro and his fellow artist Utagawa Toyokuni. The scene depicted in the painting belongs to the tradition of nōryō-yuka — the practice of constructing raised platforms along the riverbank to enjoy the cool of summer evenings. Scholar Liza Dalby describes the print as follows: a geisha holds a shamisen, a maid carries a flask of sake, and a courtesan sits on a wooden veranda over the Kamo River in the early 1800s. The original painted work is held in the collection of the "Minneapolis Institute of Art" (Minneapolis, USA). The triptych woodblock print made after the painting is also known in several museum collections, including the "British Museum" (London).
