A Healthier Homemade Ketchup Our 4 Year Old Loves

Homemade Healthier Ketchup for Kids | Garden Tomatoes, Less Sugar, Kid-Approved Ketchup is one of the most loved foods for kids — but also one of the sneakiest sources of sugar and ultra-processed ingredients. In this video, we make a homemade, healthier ketchup using ripe tomatoes from our own garden, designed especially for our 4-year-old who loves ketchup with everything. Our goal wasn’t to reinvent ketchup or turn it into something “fancy”. We wanted a Heinz-style ketchup taste — smooth, familiar, gently sweet and tangy — without artificial thickeners, flavour enhancers, or excessive sugar. This recipe is intentionally mild, not spicy, not curry-style, and absolutely kid-approved. Along the way, we also explore the surprising history of ketchup, from its fermented origins to how modern ketchup became one of the most important condiments in today’s food culture. Understanding why ketchup tastes the way it does helps us recreate it at home — and improve it without taking away what kids love. This video is for:• Parents looking for healthier food swaps for children• Families wanting to reduce sugar without food battles• Gardeners with too many tomatoes• Anyone curious about traditional vs modern food This isn’t about banning ketchup — it’s about making it better, more real, and more connected to where food comes from 🌱 Ingredients (base version) 1.5 kg very ripe garden tomatoes ½ cup apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar) ¼–⅓ cup sugar (start low, adjust later) 1½ tsp salt ¼ tsp onion powder (or very mild fresh onion, strained out) ¼ tsp garlic powder (optional but helpful) Optional but important flavour nudges (use sparingly): A pinch of ground cloves (literally a pinch) A pinch of cinnamon (even smaller than the cloves) These shouldn’t be identifiable — if you can taste “cinnamon,” it’s too much. Method (texture matters!) Cook the tomatoes Chop and simmer uncovered for 30–40 minutes until broken down Blend completely smooth Use a blender or stick blender Then strain through a sieve (this is crucial for kid acceptance) Return to pot Add vinegar, sugar, salt, powders, and spices Simmer gently 30–60 minutes until thick Stir often to prevent sticking Taste adjustment Add sugar gradually Aim for: sweet → tangy → savoury Cool fully before judging Ketchup tastes sharper when hot Storage Fridge: 2–3 weeks Freezer: freezes beautifully in small jars You can also water-bath preserve if you’re experienced. #homemadeketchup #healthyketchup #ketchupforkids #kidfriendlyrecipes #healthiercondiments #homemadecondiments #lesssugarrecipes #feedingkids #parentingfood #realfoodforkids #gardenrecipes #tomatorecipes #fromgardentotable #homemadewithlove #traditionalfood #modernfood #familycooking #foodforchildren #healthyfamilyfood #homegrownfood
