Art of Ancient China and Japan

Chinese culture has existed in one way or another since the Neolithic period with evidence of artifact dating to around 5ooo BCE. Through the centuries, Chinese culture has changed and evolved due to political and cultural divisions, the rise and fall of ruling dynasties, invasion and through the influence of Buddhist beliefs coming from India. The history of Chinese art and architecture is as complex and diverse as its history. The technological and artistic innovation of Chinese culture and art thought the millennia cannot be overstated. The insular culture of Japan, while often drawing artistic influence from its Chinese neighbor, has produced a distinct history of art and artifacts that shows Chinese influence, but reflect the particular cultural distinctions of this island culture.
