Wolgan Falls Abseil Adventure | An Epic Descent into the Hidden Heart of the Wolgan Valley

We’re back with another wild descent — this time tackling the spectacular Wolgan Falls in the heart of the Blue Mountains. Far from a stroll in the park, this trip is a full-on canyon-style adventure: think sandstone cliffs, cascading water, and big exposure. Trip Overview The modern route was pioneered by Laurie “Loz” Cohen (UBMBC) and friends, and a small cascade above the main drop now carries his name — Laurie Cohen Falls. His legacy lives on every time someone pulls that rope over the edge. The abseil can be done as a five-pitch route if you wish to stay dry, or a four-pitch variant if you take the wet line straight down the main falls. The walk in is reasonably short — however, the scramble back up to the top of the cliffs after finishing the descent is demanding, so be prepared for a steep climb out. Before committing to the final pitch, be sure to sign the logbook located near the top of the last drop — it’s not hard to find and a great way to record your adventure for others to see. Equipment & Technical Notes • For the five-pitch (dry) version, a single 70 m rope is sufficient. • If you’re taking the wet line, you’ll need two ropes joined to allow for the final wet 60 m pitch. • Conditions can change quickly after rain, so always check water flow and access status before heading out. Walk In & Out The track to the start point is short and pleasant, winding through open woodland and sandstone gullies to the brink of the falls. After completing the descent, the exit involves a steep and strenuous scramble back up to the cliffs — a good test of endurance at the end of an already big day.
