The Hakodate Main Line between Hakodate and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto boasts one of the highest passenger density rates in Hokkaido, excluding the Sapporo area. The Hakodate Liner is also incredibly popular. However, with the extension of the Shinkansen to Sapporo, the line will be separated from JR as a parallel conventional line, leading the Hokkaido Prefectural Government and local municipalities along the route to consider a bus conversion. The latest passenger density is 5,479 people. According to the prefectural government's estimates, an increase of 100 buses per day would be necessary. Maintaining a railway is apparently expensive, and it seems that a bus conversion is the only option.
