The Hakodate Main Line's mountain section (between Otaru and Oshamanbe), which has been scheduled for closure and replacement by buses, still saw a large number of passengers using Yoichi Station, even during the off-season. The Hokkaido Prefectural Government decided to close the line, arguing that "most passengers would switch to the Shinkansen," but... They completely misjudged the fact that there will be no Shinkansen station in Yoichi, and that this section is used more by locals than tourists. With a transport density of 2000 people between Otaru and Yoichi, it's no surprise that no bus companies have refused to serve the line. They've reached a complete dead end.
