The roads are a mix of dirt and paved surfaces, which is preferable during the dry season, as the dirt roads deteriorate somewhat when it rains or when streams overflow. On this trip through the mountains of Lara and Trujillo, I set out to find the land of the legendary Rafael Montilla, 'El Tigre de Guaito' (The Tiger of Guaito). But what began as a historical and coffee-growing route ended with an unexpected encounter: an isolated community, nestled in the middle of a forest, living by its own principles, seeking the freedom that comes from...
