America's First Mile (Fort Kent, Maine)
September 14, 2023 -- U.S. Route 1 was created in 1926 from a patchwork of regional highways into one uniform national thoroughfare from Fort Kent, Maine, to Key West, Florida. At 2,446 miles, it is the longest north-south road in the United States. I was on and off the route as I traveled north from Key West over a four month period and was glad to reach this milestone at the confluence of the Fish River and the Saint John River, on the border with New Brunswick, Canada.
