Part 1 begins at a monument in Fort Kent, dedicated to the "first mile" of US Route 1, a milestone. It represents the official the northern terminus of the highway. From Fort Kent, Route 1 meanders along the St. John River, the water boundary between Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, before veering southward. As the highway snakes along the Atlantic coastline, it encounters a bevy of small, idyllic towns and picturesque vistas. This leg represents two days of travel, separated by the black fadeout midway through the video. The musical selections are: "Bethena, A Concert Waltz" by Scott Joplin "Paris Nostalgie," "Cine a Papa," and "Beaux Quarters," from Killer Tracks.
