Episode 29 Walking Through Hezekiah’s Tunnel

Welcome to Episode #29 of our series, “Picture This” from Israel! This episode takes us on a real adventure as we walk through Hezekiah’s Tunnel in Jerusalem. Within the City of David is a 1,710-foot tunnel chiseled out of bedrock in 701 BC (or slightly before) by King Hezekiah. We know this because the Bible tells us (2 Kings 20, 2 Chronicles 32, Isaiah 8, etc…). The tunnel was discovered in the 1880s. Water from the Gihon Spring still flows through the tunnel. The purpose of the tunnel was to divert water from the spring to within the heightened walls of the city at the southern. According to the inscription found at the end of the tunnel, two teams of rock-cutters cut out the tunnel. At the end of the tunnel was a pool to collect the water (i.e. in the “Lower Pool”). This tunnel project was a remarkable engineering feat! Today, we walk through the tunnel with water shoes and flashlights. It is quite the experience!
