On a summer evening, the narrow lanes are shaded by mature trees, while gray-brick courtyard houses, quiet alleyways, and the routines of local residents capture the timeless character of southern Beijing. As the walk continues, colorful murals, cat-themed installations, and small public art pieces appear throughout the neighborhood, turning each corner into a new discovery and adding a playful layer to the traditional hutong landscape. Reaching Xizhuan Hutong, signs of urban renewal become more apparent. Several historic courtyard houses have been carefully transformed into cafés, restaurants, and independent boutiques. Rather than replacing the old neighborhood, these new businesses are woven into its existing fabric, preserving the hutong’s intimate scale while bringing fresh energy to the community.
