[History & Culture] Mingyue Bay Village is a renowned historic and cultural village in China, located on Xishan Island in the heart of Lake Tai. Legend has it that the area has been inhabited since the Spring and Autumn period, and it derived its name from a romantic story where King Fuchai of Wu and the legendary beauty Xi Shi admired the bright moon here together. Famous Tang Dynasty poets such as Bai Juyi, Pi Rixiu, and Lu Guimeng visited this place and left behind immortal verses. [Key Features] Surrounded by mountains on three sides and facing Lake Tai, the village is lush with vegetation all year round. At the entrance stands an ancient camphor tree aged approximately 1,200 years, along with the Mingyue Bridge from the Qing Dynasty and an ancient pier stretching into the lake. The village’s most unique feature is its chessboard-like street layout, consisting of a main north-south thoroughfare and multiple intersecting alleys. Beneath the granite-paved streets lies an ingenious drainage system that allows water to drain rapidly. It is said that even after heavy rain, one could walk on these stone streets in embroidered shoes without getting them wet.
