Sid's Excellent Adventure

A LongEZ over the North Atlantic? Cold water? Glaciers? Icebergs? 1987??? Truly an adventure of a lifetime! No GPS, no satellite phone, but lots of luck. Dr. Sid Tolchin retired from San Diego CA to Western North Carolina and immediately found fellow pilots through EAA Chapter 1016, the Western North Carolina Pilots Association, the Fairweather Flyers, The Western North Carolina Air Museum and airport bums who haunt the Hendersonville NC runways. Sid's day job as a world class neurosurgeon interfered mightily with his passion for flying airplanes but he enjoyed a full menu of flying activity, much of it in the Cessna single-engine lineup. At one point he explored the mystery of helicopter flying but ended up in the experimental category; first in a VariEZE and later as a co-builder of his beloved LongEZ, the airplane featured in this remarkable flight. Today, Sid enjoys going up and looking down from his Aerolite 103 ultralight vehicle and plumbing the dark proclivities of the 2-cycle Rotax that makes it go.
