The first question was simple: Does the engine even turn? Missing a kickstarter lever is usually not a great sign, but before giving up we decided to investigate. Looking inside the cylinder revealed something unexpected. Plenty of carbon buildup, but almost no rust. That's a win in my book. Next came the old ATF and acetone treatment. We filled the cylinder, let it soak, and started working the engine back and forth. To our surprise, it moved! More squirting, more turning, and eventually even a drill got involved. Squirt, turn, repeat. By the end of the day we were getting what felt like decent compression with the old thumb-over-the-plug-hole test. Then we moved on to spark. That's where things got interesting. Some previous owner had chopped wires, twisted them together, and generally created a wiring nightmare. No spark. After some troubleshooting, I'm beginning to suspect the ignition coil has failed—which unfortunately means an engine-out replacement on these little Hondas. Not today. Instead, we rolled the CL70 outside for its first bath in years. Once the dirt came off, we got our first real look at what we're dealing with. Highlights included what appears to be a trampoline spring serving as the rear brake return spring. This little Honda is going to be a fun one.
