The Biggest Name in Audiophile Vinyl Still Uses Kenwood?
Kevin travels to Salina, Kansas, to visit Acoustic Sounds founder Chad Kassem and explore one of the most incredible vintage stereo and vinyl record collections we’ve ever seen! For Chad Kassem and Acoustic Sounds equipment specialist Chad Stelly, vintage audio gear is more than just electronics—it’s artwork. The shelves are packed with classic components from Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui, Kenwood, Sony, JVC, Harman Kardon, Sherwood and many more legendary hi-fi brands. But this isn’t simply a museum. Chad and his team still use this equipment, including a massive Kenwood Supreme 600 integrated amplifier and Pioneer HPM-100 speakers, to listen to records and help evaluate potential Analogue Productions reissues. Chad and Stelly share the childhood memories that inspired the collection, stories about tracking down rare receivers and their thoughts on what makes vintage stereo equipment so special. They also explain why affordable components can be every bit as enjoyable as the most valuable collector pieces. You’ll see: • Rare Marantz, Sansui, Pioneer and Kenwood components • Chad Kassem’s enormous vinyl record collection • A working Kenwood Supreme and Pioneer HPM-100 system • The surprisingly affordable Kenwood KA-7100 integrated amplifier • How Acoustic Sounds evaluates records for possible reissue • The future Vinyl Vault brick-and-mortar record store • Blue Heaven Studios and other incredible Salina music venues • A preview of The Vinyl Summit, October 15–18, 2026 The Vinyl Summit is Acoustic Sounds’ 40th-anniversary celebration and promises to be an unforgettable weekend for vinyl collectors, audiophiles and music lovers. Plans include a huge free record convention, live jazz and blues performances, studio and facility tours, late-night jam sessions and plenty of opportunities to meet other members of the vinyl community. The Skylabs team will be there, so be sure to stop by our booth and say hello! What is your favorite component in Chad’s collection? And what vintage receiver, amplifier or pair of speakers would be the centerpiece of your dream system? Let us know in the comments.
