【自衛隊が歩いて物資運ぶ】今も2600人孤立…集団避難打診も「地元に愛着」という人も(2024年1月11日)

Self-Defense Force members walk up steep slopes. They are carrying relief supplies to an area that has been isolated since the earthquake. As of 2 PM on January 11th, approximately 2,600 people in 22 districts across Ishikawa Prefecture were isolated. On January 11th, Self-Defense Force members walked to the Nishihō district of Wajima City to deliver food items such as instant noodles, bread, water, and children's diapers. (Resident of Nishihō district) "We need kerosene. Did you walk all the way here? That must be tough. We have no electricity or gas. We're so grateful for what the Self-Defense Forces have given us." Group evacuations of isolated areas also began on January 10th. It is said that the Nishihō district has been asked if they would like to participate in the group evacuation, but some elderly residents, who are attached to their hometown, are reluctant to evacuate. (Yoshitaka Uramoto, head of Nishibo district, Wajima City) "They want to evacuate everyone. We can't leave a single person behind, so we came to persuade them. This is difficult. There are still people who haven't come to the evacuation centers." The residents are being forced to make the difficult choice of whether or not to leave the town they've grown so attached to. Amidst this, there was a place in Wajima City trying to return to normalcy. "Shimoguchi," a clothing store in Monzen-machi. On January 10th, they opened the store for the first time since the earthquake. The reason was… (Jugo Shimoguchi) "The baths started yesterday, so we've been getting a lot of inquiries about underwear and things like that." The Self-Defense Forces began providing bathing support at Wajima City evacuation centers on January 8th. As a result, residents requested new underwear, so the whole family pitched in to clean up the store and managed to reopen. (Shimoguchi's 15-year-old son) "Even when I was putting away clothes, customers came in, and I felt like I was being useful. That motivated me." (Shimoguchi Togo) "Pajamas, underwear, sweatpants, etc. Things that you can move around in quickly at an evacuation center sell well." We spoke to a customer who was in the store. (Customer) "The public bath is opening today, so I'll change my underwear there. (Q: Does wearing new clothes make you feel different?) Yes, it does." There was also this reunion in the store once the lights were restored. [Conversation between Shimoguchi and an acquaintance] "Oh, I'm so glad you're well." "I'm fine." "Come on in, come inside and sit down." "Was your house okay?" "It's no good... Almost completely ruined." Until now, there was no way to check on each other's safety because cell phones weren't working, but opening the store allowed them to confirm each other's well-being. (An acquaintance of Ms. Shimoguchi) "I'm so glad we finally got to see each other. I'm really relieved." However, for those forced to evacuate, anxiety about when this situation will end is mounting. A team led by Kiwa Kawamoto, a public health nurse and employee of Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, investigated the sanitary conditions of evacuation centers in Noto Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, starting on January 7th. While some evacuation centers had voluntarily taken measures to prevent droplet transmission by placing sheets on toilets, the main obstacle to maintaining hygiene was the water supply. (Kiwa Kawamoto, Public Health Nurse, Health Promotion Division, Sakai City) "The sewage system is still shut off, so people can't flush the toilet after using it." At the evacuation centers, people were using alcohol disinfectants they had brought themselves, but… (Kiwa Kawamoto, Public Health Nurse, Sakai City Health Promotion Division) "We are particularly concerned that the spread of infection will be rapid because handwashing is still not possible. We're seeing situations where one person develops a fever on the first day, then two more develop fevers the following morning, and so on." Amidst the harsh cold, concerns are also growing about the health of those who have evacuated. ▼MBS NEWS HP https://www.mbs.jp/news/ ▼Daily delivery of the latest news and features.
