「まるで城」静岡市【小島陣屋】復元された書院・石垣・大手道で知る陣屋の構造とは

In 1704, Matsudaira Shinji built a jinya in Kojima, Ihara County, Suruga Province. A jinya was a residence built by the lord of a small domain. During the Edo period, there were approximately 300 feudal lords across the country, but not all of them owned castles. The "castle-less daimyo" (feudal lords) (approximately 100 families) who were not permitted to own castles used jinya as their bases for government affairs. The difference between a jinya and a castle is the defensive structure. Jinyas also had moats and stone walls, but they were small in scale. Jinyas were specialized for administrative and residential functions, and the role of the moats and stone walls was to divide the land. The lords who lived in jinya had land holdings of 10,000 to 30,000 koku, and could only mobilize a few hundred troops. They may have been able to suppress uprisings, but not for full-scale warfare. Jinya were designed to perfectly match the capabilities of such lords. Among these jinya, Kojima Jinya in Shizuoka Prefecture is said to be "almost like a castle." In fact, it seems strange that a jin'ya that was not designed for war is being evaluated as a "castle," a military facility, but when you actually visit the site, it's strange how it makes sense. Kojima Jin'ya is located on a hill surrounded by a river and cliffs, and you can see the remains of numerous defensive facilities that make use of the terrain. It seems that the lord of this place was thinking, "Let's make the jin'ya look like a castle" without incurring the wrath of the shogunate. Let's take a look at this somewhat sad thought.
