In the video, you'll find practical strategies and skills you can cultivate to transcend anxiety. I'll also explain the most common mistakes you're likely making, which have caused your anxiety to escalate and prevent you from living a peaceful life. I'm Dr. Andrea Tomassetti, a psychologist specializing in anxiety disorders; I treat panic attacks, from OCD to social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety. In today's topic, we'll talk about how to overcome anxiety. What's the key mistake all of us who are experiencing severe anxiety find ourselves making? It's precisely that of wanting to approach anxiety with the desire to overcome it. In fact, we see our anxiety as if it were an enemy, something to be eliminated from ourselves so we can finally live happily. This is the first huge mistake we can make because we have no way of controlling our emotions. This is a basic assumption we must always keep in mind, and you can easily see it in your own life. If I were to ask you now simply that from that first glance you gave me, if you could instantly fall in love with me, what would you say? It's absolutely impossible for you to fall in love with me with just one look; it's not possible because you can't arouse your emotions on command. The exact same thing happens with anxiety; in fact, you have no way of making anxiety disappear from your life with the snap of your fingers. We shouldn't approach anxiety as something to be eliminated; anxiety has its own specific function and has played a fundamental role in our evolution; otherwise, nature would have removed it from our repertoire. Instead, if it's so present in our lives, it's because it played a fundamental role in the past, which unfortunately doesn't have the same importance in today's world. The world today is obviously not as dangerous as it was 10,000 years ago. A second problem, closely related to this concept, is that when we try to approach anxiety by attempting to defeat and eliminate it, we activate all our control mechanisms. Therefore, when we experience strong feelings of anxiety, we flee from the situation that makes us feel bad. Everyone uses different ways to control anxiety; some use psychoactive substances like alcohol or drugs. But you see, a problem is your desire to control something that is naturally beyond your control. I know we evolved to control the external world, but the mistake is wanting to control our internal world as well, that is, our emotions and our problems. The control we try to exert over anxiety ends up increasing anxiety levels. Control doesn't solve the problem; it represents the problem itself and fuels it. With this important premise in mind, let's look at the strategies that, when used correctly, can help us manage anxiety, but in a positive way. The first thing we can do is focus on our breathing. Trained, slow, diaphragmatic breathing has extraordinary effects. It has the ability to relax our entire body, almost similar to some benzodiazepines, though obviously at a low dose. Through breathing, we can calm ourselves and lower anxiety levels. To combat anxiety, we can also practice muscle relaxation. Several techniques have been recognized for their effectiveness. When combined with diaphragmatic breathing, muscle relaxation can lower anxiety levels. Do you want to free yourself from anxiety and panic but don't know how?
